A layout is a built environment consisting of multiple structures (buildings, landscape features) and connecting infrastructure (roads, train tracks, etc.). The term is most commonly used in describing a train display, although it can be used in relation to displays in any theme.

A personal layout is one created by a single builder using his or her own collection. A club (LUG or LTC) layout, generally a much more complex undertaking, involves joining creations by any number of builders into a unified whole often using a locally-developed modular building standard as a starting point.
