Track or track-pieces can be joined together to let trains run over it. There have been different systems of tracks in the offerings of Lego.
LEGO Track Systems

- 1966-1990 - rails and sleepers were independant and all-plastic.
- 1991-2007 - integrated tracks elements joined rails and sleepers into a single piece with metal overlay.
- 2006-present - the same integrated track elements as previously but without the metal overlay.
In the real world Ballasted track is track laid down on a bed of (usually) crushed stone or ballast. In the L-Gauge world, it means track which has been mounted on top of simulated ballast made of small LEGO elements to create a more realistic landscape.
