Mindstorms NXT

Mindstorms NXT can refer to a group of Mindstorms sets released in late July 2006[1], and replaces the RCX Robotics Invention System. As of December 2008, there are currently two kits, the MINDSTORMS NXT Retail Kit, and the MINDSTORMS NXT Base Education Kit.



The MINDSTORMS NXT Retail Kit ontains:

  • 519 Technic elements
  • an NXT Intelligent Brick
  • 3 Interactive Servo Motors
  • 1 Touch Sensor
  • 1 Ultrasonic SensorSystem
  • 1 Light Sensor
  • 1 Sound Sensor
  • 7 cables
  • NXT-G programming software for PC or Mac platforms
  • Quickstart Guide
  • building instructions for 18 Robot Challenges.

The models that have instructions included in this kit are the Alpha Rex, Spike, Tribot, and RoboArm. The instructions for these models can be found in the NXT-G software package, complete with building and programming directions

The MINDSTORMS NXT Base Education Kit contains:

  • 431 LEGO Technic elements
  • NXT Intelligent Brick
  • Rechargeable lithium battery and charger
  • 3 servo motors
  • 1 ultrasonic distance and movement sensor
  • 1 sound sensor, with sound pattern
  • 1 light sensor, detecting light intensity
  • 2 touch sensors (press/release/bump detection)
  • 3 converter cables, for using Mindstorms RIS 2.0 sensors and motors with the NXT brick (each 39cm)
 These are required when using the lamps (Below)
  • 7 connector cables (one 20cm, four 35cm, two 50cm)
  • 3 lamps
  • NXT-G Education programming software
  • 2 trays for sorting and storing LEGO Technic elements

First use

Before starting to play with the NXT, you might want to upgrade the firmware. It fixes some bugs and allows you to store more programs.


As this set is Lego Technic, it involves the same building techniques. Though there are some tricks to attach the motors to the NXT brick.
