The 2x4 stud LEGO Brick is for many the icon that represents The LEGO Company (TLG) brand to the world.

Three plates = one brick in height.
While properly it is an element many AFOLs use the term brick as a generic descriptor of TLG plastic building toys. In that sense bricks come in many sizes and even shapes (not all are rectangular) but the distinguishing feature of what most consider to be bricks is that they are at least 24 LDU (3 plates) high.

TLG itself has made trademark claims in court claiming the LEGO Brick as their intellectual property.

As Measurement

Most AFOLs also use Brick as a measurement itself. (ie: I built a house 10 bricks tall.)
