2012 Reboot

I made a start at some promotional initiatives by adding a link to this project page on the front page including the "Do you BW?" banner to see if we cannot get it out there. I am also looking for suggestions. So far:

  • Gonna start using What's New? blog for a weekly summary of what is happening.
  • I created a page on FB:

What else? Tedward 13:15, 24 May 2012 (CDT)

I think it may be time to start firming up details of our official relaunch. In particular: the date, what goals we would like to see achieved before the relaunch and a plan of action for the relaunch. I suggest we start with a discussion of the goals first which will inform the date followed by a plan of action for promoting the relaunch.Tedward 10:18, 6 July 2012 (CDT)

Pre-Relaunch Goals

  1. Update vision and mission statements
  2. Complete organizational structure review
  3. Identify significant gaps in content, add to requested articles
  4. Complete a site usability review (and fix what's unusable. ALITTLESlow: t/c 10:59, 18 July 2012 (CDT))
  5. Complete a review of BW branding
  6. Update and expand the following resources:Help:Editing, Help:Style guide and Brickwiki:FAQ

(above list by Lar, please edit mercilessly ++Lar: t/c 09:45, 7 July 2012 (CDT))

Can we call the list of goals complete? Tedward 11:50, 13 July 2012 (CDT)
I think so. --ALITTLESlow: t/c 10:59, 18 July 2012 (CDT)

Speaking purely for myself (ALITTLESlow: t/c) (comment mercilessly):

Site goals, vision, mission, branding

  • defining mission as our purpose, I repeat for convenience, with minor edits, what I summarized in Brickwiki:Open_Questions, that the mission of BrickWiki is:
    • to help newbies and experts find introductory material to LEGO topics of interest to them. I.e. to be a guide to the LEGO domain.
    • to help newbies and experts find resources to dig deeper into those topics. I.e. to be a gateway to the LEGO domain.
    • to be an encylopedia of LEGO technology (our collective knowledge of what we can do with LEGO elements).
    • to be an encylopedia of LEGO culture (our collective experience of the significant things we have done with LEGO elements).
  • defining brand as what comes to mind when people think of BrickWiki: "the guide and gateway to the LEGO collective."
  • defining vision as what it looks like when BrickWiki is fulfilling its mission:
    • BrickWiki is the place people go to answer a LEGO question when they don't know where to go to answer a LEGO question.
    • BrickWiki is the place people document a LEGO topic when there's no obvious place to document a LEGO topic.
  • defining goals as stepping stones to the mission, and employing SMART criteria:
    • BrickWiki will have a public launch by January 2013
    • BrickWiki will be one of the top three hits in 4 out of 5 test queries on Google by January 2013.

I think the content structure is covered under Organization (though there is an open question on theme organization), and meta structure under Governance.

REALLY Great stuff!!! Any loose ends? Print it! ++Lar: t/c 00:22, 8 July 2012 (CDT)
I think the goals are incomplete, but I can't put my finger on what's missing. (unsigned post by ALittleSlow circa 8 July 2012).
Brian, please do not forget to sign your comments with ~~~~ and can we please concentrate on simply enunciating the goals first then we can start actually working on them. I am already finding it difficult to follow the discussion above. Tedward 16:06, 9 July 2012 (CDT)

Date/timing of Relaunch Promotional Campaign

There was a question when discussing the goals above about whether to split the relaunch into targeted multiple launches for different stakeholder groups. I think this is a bad idea but also a good opportunity after the re-launch to target some recruitment efforts. We should have a single global re-launch but then follow it up with some targeted "hey, we have some gaps in the XXXX category. Would your LUG/Forum members/personal network be willing to give us a hand?" Tedward 16:10, 9 July 2012 (CDT)

I think asking LUGs to work on their own page PLUS pick out a few pages to suggest to each LUG might work well. ++Lar: t/c 18:04, 9 July 2012 (CDT)
Sounds good. I've been thinking along similar lines to Lar about inviting specific groups/individuals to work on specific topics. Some other disjointed thoughts:
  • Reaching the AFOL community seems fairly straightforward. But how do we attract newbies?
  • The site is fairly usable as is, and the improvements I have in mind could easily by implemented in time for a September launch. --ALittleSlow 22:13, 10 July 2012 (CDT)

I realize we've stagnated. The "improvements" I refer to above included setting up mailing lists so notifications could be routed for timely responses, and that responsiveness I think is needed before relaunch so we don't fall flat. That has been pending changing the DNS MX record to Google Apps for which we are dependant on Venkatesh. Lar and I will be at Brickworld Fort Wayne this weekend, so I'm sure we'll talk. --ALITTLESlow: t/c 14:29, 20 September 2012 (CDT)

Yes and good. Tedward 10:38, 24 September 2012 (CDT)

Gaps in Content

I was thinking more about identifying areas or categories that are particularly thin rather than individual articles. Tedward 23:55, 10 July 2012 (CDT)
However that's a policy and if it needs fixing, it needs fixing. Maybe we need a "Gaps in policy" section too... That said, What's wrong, ALS? ++Lar: t/c
Do you mean what's wrong with the privacy policy? We don't have one. --ALITTLESlow: t/c 19:15, 16 July 2012 (CDT)
  • How are the boat article section? Work on different hull types, float vs non float, coverage of the BrickWorld Boat Races, etc? this search shows there's a content gap. There must be more like it, who else has some gaps to report? ++Lar: t/c 00:51, 11 July 2012 (CDT)
  • Digital LEGO and specifically the sub-category Mindstorms is an area that needs not only a lot of contributions but a lot of re-organising I think. I'm reluctant to do too much as I have almost zero subject area knowledge to the point I am not even sure what should go where. Tedward 11:49, 13 July 2012 (CDT)

Do we intend to fill these gaps ourselves before official launch, recruit some people to fill them before official launch, or something else? --ALITTLESlow: t/c 19:15, 16 July 2012 (CDT)

According to the goals at the top we are simply trying to identify problem areas and add them to the requested list. We can start working on them ourselves but I would suggest that we prioritize the relaunch goals first. Tedward 10:29, 17 July 2012 (CDT)

Site Usability Review

  • I know an AFOL who is a professional software tester. I'll see if we can't involve him.
  • It would be nice to take humans out of the process of confirming accounts so that they be approved instantly. I'm going to work on our spam control measures so we can hopefully relax the requirement to manually confirm accounts.
  • The wiki markup editor could be better.
  • Page templates would make creating new pages easier for the inexperienced.
  • The copyrights field in file uploads needs work.

--ALittleSlow 22:25, 10 July 2012 (CDT)

Not sure I think we are ready to take humans out of the approval role just yet. maybe we just need more folk helping. 00:52, 11 July 2012 (CDT) (this was me... ++Lar: t/c 10:11, 18 July 2012 (CDT))

I just asked IndyLUG members to take BW for a spin. We'll see.... ALITTLESlow: t/c 20:33, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Campaign Plan

A scatter shot of ideas:

  • Contact the People, asking them to verify their own pages and those of the people they know.
  • Sponsor Events like Brickworld. This would take money, unless the sponsorship takes a form amenable to what a wiki can do. Oh, but this would almost certainly violate What BrickWiki is not.
  • Contact subject matter experts in selected categories and/or for selected articles, asking them for suggestions for improvement.
  • Scan other wikis for opportunities to interwiki link to BrickWiki.
  • Add BrickWiki to the interwiki tables of relevant other wikis.

--ALITTLESlow: t/c 21:58, 16 July 2012 (CDT)

I suggest flyers... if we can develop a flyer in time for BrickFair I will spring for printing some, and hand them out at my booth... ++Lar: t/c 06:11, 18 July 2012 (CDT)

LEGO Wiki Session at Brickworld

Bryan Bonahoom is soliciting presenters for Brickworld Chicago, June 2013. What about a LEGO Wiki presentation? Perhaps with Ajraddatz or another Brickipedia rep? Other LEGO Wikis (LDraw))? ALITTLESlow: t/c 03:56, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

If you can do it I would think it is a great idea. I did a session on BW @ BrickCon a couple of years ago that was unfortunately timed - BW went offfline for an aextended time right around the con. I was really surpised to have Tormod sit in on my session! I will be doing another one this year now that we are back up and running. Tedward 15:24, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
Someone had suggested earlier that I upload the presentation I did at BW. I tried just now and discovered that we only allow image files to be uploaded. Should we change that? ALITTLESlow: t/c 21:00, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
I think if we have the capacity (an issue in years gone by I believe) then we should allow ppt files. Sound and video should probably still be restricted but maybe we could create a BW Youtube channel for those? Tedward 15:11, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Presentation @ BrickCon2013

OK, I am all set to do a session @ the upcoming BrickCon. I will have a short presentation on LEGO and wikis in general and then I have been promised a live feed to take people through the site and make live edits and perhaps sign up a new user or two. Tedward 16:02, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
