The Black Falcons (sometimes referenced as BF) are a Castle subtheme or faction identified and named for the falcon design on the shields and livery. They were introduced in 1984 in contrast to the Crusaders, and continued to appear in sets up through 1992. Unlike later factions, the Black Falcons were not presented as "good" or "evil" except insofar as they appeared in contrast to "King's Castle", and with the name "Black Falcon", which has a slightly darker connotation.

Shields from Castle factions. Black Falcons far right.

The Black Falcons are never actually referenced as a faction by the LEGO company as the Black Falcons. The name derives from the US set name Black Falcon's Fortress (6074). Thanks to the grammatical meaning of the set name, the set actually refers to a character named Black Falcon, rather than the theme itself. However, the name Black Falcons came to be the accepted name in fan terminology.
