Billund, Denmark is the home of The LEGO Company founder, Ole Kirk Christiansen, who worked there as a carpenter before creating the company that would one day grow into one of the most respected toy companies in the world. The growth of the company also had profound implications for what essentially became a company town.
The original production facilities were located in Billund and until the early 21st century virtually all LEGO bricks were produced there. To accommodate the large number of visitors curious about the company and production of LEGO products the first LEGOLAND theme park was opened in 1968.
